Auftakt zu meinem Reiseblog macht meine lang ersehnte Reise nach Island vor 3 Wochen. Es war nur ein recht kurzer Trip, der mitnichten perfekt war, aber im Großen und Ganzen bin ich echt happy mit dem Urlaub. Vielleicht verschlägt es mich wieder mal nach Island, dann aber eher in den Sommermonaten.

Denn leider hat der Winter mir teilweise nen Strich durch meinen Urlaub gemacht. Samstagnacht in Reykjavik gelandet, wurde ich gleich mal mit einem Wintersturm begrüßt, der dazu führte, dass ich erst gegen 4 Uhr morgens endlich in meinem Hotelbett lag. Dieser Sturm tobte auch am Sonntag den ganzen Tag, weshalb ich meine City Sightseeing Tour am Morgen zwar machen konnte, die Nachmittagstour wurde aber leider abgesagt. Was echt schade war, da es zu den Wasserfällen und Geysiren gehen sollte. Aber da ich unter ziemlichen Schlafmangel von der Nacht davor litt, habe ich zumindest etwas an Schlaf dadurch nachholen können. Bei dem Wintersturm jagt man keinen Hund vor die Tür, es war echt einfach nur ungemütlich und ekelhaft und hat keinen Spaß gemacht, draußen unterwegs zu sein.

Starting point for my travel blog is my trip to Iceland 3 weeks ago, which I have wanted to do for a looooooooong time. It was only a rather short trip, which certainly wasn't perfect, but overall I'm really happy with the holiday. Perhaps I will return to Iceland one day, but then during the summer months.

Because unfortunately the winter ruined parts of my holiday plans. Well, Saturday night I landed in Reykjavik, and was greeted with a winter storm, which lead to me finally dropping dead into my hotel bed at around 4 AM. This storm was still raging all day on Sunday, which meant I was able to do the City Sightseeing tour, but the afternoon tour to the waterfalls and geysirs was cancelled. But given I was massively sleep deprived, I was able to catch up on some sleep. That storm was so yuk and horrible and just overall nasty, it really was no fun at all being outside.

Montag war der Wintersturm endlich vorüber und meine geplanten Touren für diesen Tag fanden alle statt. Am Morgen ging es zu einer Pferdefarm und ich bin das allererste Mal auf einem Pferd geritten. Anderthalb, wenn nicht gar zwei Stunden waren wir zu Pferd unterwegs durch die verschneite isländische Landschaft. Selbst durch gefrostete Bäche ging es, wobei meine werte Stute Blessa meinte, ihren Durst dort befrieden zu müssen. Aber ich hab sie dann doch recht zügig dazu bekommen, endlich weiterzumarschieren. Ich glaub, fürs erste Mal auf einem Pferd hab ich mich gar nicht so schlecht gemacht, irgendwann hab ich auch Trab halbwegs im Griff gehabt. Galopp gab es aber zum Glück nicht!

Ziemlich durchgefroren war ich echt froh um meinen Nachmittagsausflug in die Blaue Lagune. Island ist ja vulkanisch, entsprechend gibt es sehr viele natürliche Thermalquellen und die Blaue Lagune ist ein ganzes Spa-Erlebnis drumrum. Einfach nur gigantisch, die Bilder werden glaub ich ganz gut zeigen wie kalt es draußen, aber wie wunderbar warm das Wasser war. Einfach himmlisch. Und nach dem Wintersturm gab es endlich richtig schönes Wetter. Man konnte auch Sauna und Dampfbad genießen. Ich hab mir meine allererste Massage gegönnt. Was mir gar nicht bewusst war, als ich diese geordert habe, dass diese ebenfalls draußen im Wasser stattfindet. Man legt sich rücklings auf so eine Art Joga-Matte, bekommt ein nasses Handtuch übergelegt, natürlich schön warm von dem Thermal-Wasser und dann lässt man es sich gutgehen. Ich hab den letzten freien Slot des Tages bekommen gehabt, was abends um 18:30 Uhr war. Und um diese Zeit ist Sonnenuntergang in Island. Sprich ich trieb in diesem warmen Wasser, habe eine sehr angenehme Rücken, Schulter, Nacken, Kopf, Gesichts-Massage bekommen (von einem Burschen, der auch durchaus ganz ansehnlich war ;) ) und über mir Sonnenuntergangshimmel in den wunderschönsten Farben. Ein absoluter Traum.

On Monday the winter storm was finally over and my planned tours for that day happened. In the morning I was part of a group who left for a horse farm and for the first time in my life I was out and about on a horse. We were riding for about an hour and a half, maybe even two hours through the snowy, Icelandic landscape. Even through frozen streams, however my mare Blessa decided to kill her thirst in it. But I was able to make her move on rather quickly. I think, overall, I didn't do too bad for my first time on the back of a horse, and eventually I even managed to handle her trot quite well. Thankfully we never got to galloping!

Pretty much frozen I was really glad to have my afternoon trip to the Blue Lagoon coming up. Iceland is of volcanic origin, which is the reason why there are so many natural thermal springs and the Blue Lagoon is an entire spa experience. Absolutely incredible, I think the pictures will show you well, how cold it was outside, but how amazingly warm the water was. So heavenly. And after the winter storm we finally had lovely weather. You could even enjoy the sauna and steam bath. And I decided to get my very first massage. What I didn't realise when I bought it, was that it was taking place outside in the water. You lay down on your back on some kind of yoga mat, then you get a wet towel draped over you, which is nice and warm as it's wet with warm spring water, and then you just relax and enjoy. I had been given the last free slot for that day, which was at 6:30 PM. And around that time it was sunset in Iceland. In other words, I was floating around in the warm water, received a very enjoyable back, shoulder, neck, head, face massage (from a guy who wasn't too bad looking either ;) ) and above me was the sky painted with sunset colours. A dream...

Dienstag hatte ich vormittags etwas Zeit für einen kleinen Spaziergang und etwas Souvenir-Shopping sowie Reykjaviks besten Hot Dog. Hab sogar einen Geocache gehoben, yay! Hab mir einen knuffigen, kleinen Kerzenhalter aus Vulkangestein und verziert mit Vulkanasche mitgebracht.

 On Tuesday I had a bit of time on my hands in the morning to go out for a walk and some souvenir shopping, as well as eating Reykjavik's best hot dog. I even found a geocache, yay! Bought a lovely, small candle holder made from volcanic stone and decorated with volcanic ash.

Gegen Mittag ging es dann auf die Whale Watching Tour.  Bei dieser Tour hat sich wirklich gezeigt, wie launisch das Wetter in Island sein kann. Der Spruch "Was? Dir gefällt das Wetter nicht? Warte einfach 5 Minuten." ist durchaus wahr. Wir haben Reykjavik  bei durchaus passablem Wetter verlassen. Und kaum waren wir ein paar Meilen geschippert, zogen Wolken auf, und kurze Zeit später fing es das Schneien an. Was natürlich die Sicht sehr beeinträchtigte. Gab zwar diverseste Vogelschwärme zu beobachten, und irgendwann brach die Sonne auch wieder durch die Wolken durch, aber Wale gab es leider nicht zu sehen. Nachdem wir schon zwei Stunden unterwegs waren, haben sich endlich ein paar neugierige Delfine blicken lassen. Die sind ne ziemliche Weile um unser Schiff rumgeschwommen, was auch ein sehr schöner Anblick war.

Around noon it was time for the Whale Watching Tour. During this tour it really became very clear how temperamental the weather can be in Iceland. The phrase "What? You don't like the weather? Just wait 5 minutes." actually seems to be true. We left Reykjavik with rather good weather conditions. And once we had been out on the water for a few miles, clouds started to build and shortly after it started to now. Which obviously limited the visibility. We were able to watch a couple of flocks of birds, and at some point suddenly the sun came through the clouds, but we never got to see any whales, sadly. After we had been out and about for around two hours, we finally spotted a few very curious dolphins. They swam around our boat for quite a while, which was really lovely to watch.

Bei der Rückkehr nach Reykjavik zeigte sich, dass der Schnee landeinwärts gezogen war. Reykjavik war unter ner ziemlichen Schicht Schnee und ich sah schwarz für die Nordlichter-Tour am Abend. Ich hab mich dann in Reykjaviks besten Fish'n'Chips Laden begeben und ich muss sagen, es war wirklich lecker dort. Und verhältnismäßig günstig. Denn, meine Herren, Island ist echt teuer. Bin dann zurück ins Hotel getingelt und wappnete mich für die Absage der Nordlicht-Tour. Doch, oh Wunder, sie fand statt! Da war ich wirklich überrascht. Also nochmal ein paar Stunden auf einem Boot, da ich die Tour zu Wasser gewählt hatte. Und so schipperten wir gegen 21 Uhr los, Himmel ziemlich bedeckt. Doch nach einer Weile fingen die Wolken tatsächlich an, sich zu verziehen und nach ca. anderthalb Stunden, und ein paar Frostbeulen später, konnte man tatsächlich leichte grüne Schlieren am Himmel sehen! Ja, ich durfte Nordlichter mit eigenen Augen sehen! Nicht so krass grün wie man es sonst von Fotos kennt, aber sie waren da! Nur so schwach, dass meine Fotos absolut nüschts geworden sind :( Eines poste ich trotzdem wo ich glaube, dass man nen Hauch von grün in dem ganzen schwarz sieht. Der Veranstalter meinte es dann gut mit uns. Eigentlich sollte die Tour um 23 Uhr beendet sein, doch wir kamen erst gegen Mitternacht wieder zurück an Land. Dann Rück-Transfer zum Hotel, duschen und ab ins Bett.

Upon the return to Reykjavik it was clear that the snow had moved from sea to land. Reykjavik was covered in quite the layer of snow and I figured the Northern Lights Tour for the night will be cancelled for sure. I then went into Reykjavik's best fish'n'chips shop and I have to say, it really was delicious. And relatively cheap, compared to how expensive Iceland normally is. Afterwards I went back to my hotel and prepared myself for the news of the cancelled Northern Lights Tour. Except, which was like a miracle, it was going ahead! I was massively surprised. So, once again back on a boat for a few hours, as I had chosen the tour by boat. Which is why we left the harbour at around 9 PM, sky covered in clouds. But after a while the clouds started to clear and after about an hour and a half, and being frozen to the bones, we were really able to spot some faint green shimmers up on the sky! Yes, I got to see the Northern Lights with my own eyes! Not as bright as always seen on the pictures, but they were there! Unfortunately so faint that none of my pics managed to capture them :( I'm still posting one pic on which I believe a hint of green can be seen amongst the black. The tour operator apparently meant to give us something worth our money and so instead of returning to the harbour at around 11 PM we got there shortly before midnight. Then transfer back to the hotel, shower and off to bed.

Wieder Aufstehen um 4:30 Uhr um fertig zu packen, denn mein Flughafen-Abholbus kam um 5:30 Uhr. Am Flughafen dann endlich mal noch meine ganzen Postkarten eingeschmissen, gefrühstückt, Dutyfree-Shopping und um 8:30 Uhr ging mein Flug. Naja, wir saßen im Flieger, aber weggekommen sind wir erst ca. ne Stunde später, da das Flugzeug enteist werden musste. Ach ja, ich hab den ganzen Urlaub über kein Handy-Internet-Datenpaket kaufen müssen, da in Reykjavik an so vielen Stellen kostenloses Wifi zur Verfügung gestellt wird. Doch am Flughafen war es absolut bescheiden und die Anmeldung ins Netz ist ständig fehlgeschlagen. Fand ich durchaus faszinierend. Naja, gegen mittags war ich dann wieder in London und kurz nach 14 Uhr war ich dann endlich wieder zuhause, wo ich hundemüde erst mal auf der Couch ein Nickerchen gemacht habe.

Alles in allem ein wirklich schöner Urlaub. Wie eingangs gesagt, nicht perfekt, aber die Delfine und Nordlichter haben einiges wett gemacht, was der Winterstum anfangs ruiniert hatte. Jetzt kann ich endlich Island von meiner Reiseliste streichen. Stand dort lang genug sehr weit oben...

 Got up again at 4:30AM in order to finish packing, as my transfer bus to the airport arrived at 5:30 AM. Sent off all my postcards, had breakfast at the airport, did some duty free shopping and at 8:30 was on the plane. We only took off about an hour later as the plane had to be de-iced first. Oh, by the way, during my entire holiday I didn't have to buy a single data package for my mobile internet, as Reykjavik has so many free wifi spots, you can easily get by with those. Interestingly enough, the wifi at the airport sucked as I couldn't connect to it. Oh well, around noon I was back in London and shortly after 2 PM I was back home, where I dropped dead on the couch and napped.

All in all it really was a beautiful holiday. As I mentioned at the beginning, it wasn't perfect, but the dolphins and northern lights made up for a lot of the things the winter storm ruined. Now I can finally cross Iceland off my list of places to go. Had been on that list very high up for long enough...
